DOMESTIC WORKERS JUST SHOWED WHAT BUILDING A WINNING WORKERS RIGHTS MOVEMENT LOOKS LIKE

Workers in Washington just made history. Again. In 2018, domestic workers won landmark workplace protections in Seattle, making it the first city in the country to secure domestic workplace protections at the city level. That win inspired workers outside of the city who remained reliant on the goodwill of the employers. Now, after years of workers organizing across industries and across Washington, we won a statewide Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (DWBOR). With the passage of House Bill 2355 (HB 2355) in both chambers of the Washington state legislature, we only await the governor’s signature to make Washington the 13th state to end the exclusion of household domestic workers like nannies, gardeners, caregivers, and home cleaners from some of the most fundamental workplace protections. Once and for all.
We did this for all workers in Washington, not just the over 100,000 domestic workers in our state. We know that if anyone can be excluded from protections, everyone can be excluded next. By ending the exclusion of domestic workers, all workers in Washington are more protected. The DWBOR ensures that domestic workers in our state have minimum wage protections, the right to keep personal documents, the right to written agreements, protections against discrimination, and the tools to enforce these rights.
Throughout this fight, we have built up worker power across all of Washington. Domestic work makes all other work possible, but domestic workers perform our duties in an industry where exploitation and isolation are all too common. To build our power, we first had to find each other. That’s where organizing comes in! We built a community of domestic workers and with workers in other industries and committed to fight alongside each other and for each other. Domestic workers pulled ourselves out of the shadows and with the support of other workers, good employers, and other advocates, we put a spotlight on the industry, including the abuses we sometimes endure. We organized, we spoke out – even when it meant confronting powerful people who preferred to not acknowledge that when they make their home someone else’s workplace they become an employer – and we shifted the narrative about whose work gets to count.
Our win isn’t just an economic victory; it’s a moral victory. Together, we’re ending a relic of past exclusionary labor laws that have no place in our future. With these new protections and tools, workers in Washington can raise workplace standards for all of us. This win proves once again that worker power changes everything and with it we will make our rights real and level the playing field to make Washington work for us, not just corporations and their billionaire owners. We are building a workers rights movement that fights for what we’re owed and wins the good workplaces and good communities we all deserve. And we’ll keep organizing until it’s won.

Los trabajadores en Washington acabamos de hacer historia. Otra vez. En 2018, los trabajadores del hogar ganamos protecciones laborales históricas en Seattle, convirtiéndola en la primera ciudad del país en garantizar protecciones laborales para trabajadores del hogar a nivel municipal. Esa victoria inspiró a los trabajadores fuera de la ciudad que seguían dependiendo de la buena voluntad de los empleadores. Ahora, después de años de trabajadores organizándonos entre industrias y en todo Washington, ganamos una Carta de Derechos de los Trabajadores del Hogar (DWBOR, por sus siglas en inglés) a nivel estatal. Con la aprobación del proyecto de ley de la Cámara de Representantes 2355 (HB 2355) en ambas cámaras de la legislatura del estado de Washington, solo esperamos la firma del gobernador para que Washington sea el 13 estado en poner fin a la exclusión de trabajadores del hogar como niñeras, jardineros, cuidadores y trabajadores de limpieza de casa de algunas de las protecciones laborales más fundamentales. De una vez por todas.
Hicimos esto por todos los trabajadores en Washington, no sólo por los más de 100,000 trabajadores del hogar en nuestro estado. Sabemos que si a alguien lo pueden excluir de protecciones, a todos nos pueden excluir después. Al terminar con la exclusión de los trabajadores del hogar, todos los trabajadores en Washington quedamos más protegidos. La DWBOR garantiza que los trabajadores del hogar en nuestro estado tengamos protecciones de salario mínimo, el derecho a conservar nuestros documentos personales, el derecho a acuerdos por escrito, protecciones contra la discriminacion y las herramientas para hacer valer nuestros derechos.
A lo largo de esta lucha, hemos construido poder obrero en todo Washington. El trabajo del hogar hace posible todo lo demás, pero los trabajadores del hogar hacemos nuestro trabajo en una industria donde la explotación y el aislamiento son demasiado comunes. Para construir nuestro poder, primero tuvimos que encontrarnos entre nosotros. ¡Ahí es donde entra la organización entre trabajadores! Construimos una comunidad de trabajadores del hogar y, junto con trabajadores de otras industrias, nos comprometimos a luchar hombro a hombro y para cada uno. Los trabajadores del hogar salimos de las sombras y, con el apoyo de otros trabajadores, empleadores justos y otros aliados, pusimos un reflector sobre la industria, incluyendo los abusos que a veces soportamos. Nos organizamos, alzamos la voz – incluso cuando eso significó confrontar a personas poderosas que preferían no reconocer que cuando convierten su casa en el lugar de trabajo de otra persona, ellos se convierten en empleadores – y cambiamos la narrativa sobre qué trabajo merece contar.
Nuestra victoria no es solo una victoria económica; es una victoria moral. Juntos, estamos terminando con una reliquia de leyes laborales excluyentes del pasado que no tiene lugar en nuestro futuro. Con estas nuevas protecciones y herramientas, los trabajadores en Washington podemos elevar los estándares laborales para todos. Esta victoria vuelve a demostrar que el poder de los trabajadores lo cambia todo y con él vamos a convertir nuestros derechos en realidad y a emparejar el terreno de juego para que Washington funcione para nosotros, no solo para las corporaciones y sus dueños multimillonarios. Estamos construyendo un movimiento por los derechos de los trabajadores que lucha por lo que se nos debe y gana los buenos lugares de trabajo y las buenas comunidades que todos merecemos. Y vamos a seguir organizándonos hasta ganarlo.
